Fishing in Nouvelle-Aquitaine
Planning a fishing trip to south-west France? Nouvelle-Aquitaine is the country's most varied fishing region: the Pyrenean gaves led by the Gave d'Oloron (France's best salmon river), the carp mecca of the Dordogne, the huge Vassivière lake on the Limousin plateau and the Landes lakes of Sanguinet, Léon and Soustons — the heartland of French black bass.
Salmon season on the Gave d'Oloron peaks in spring and summer (special regime with mandatory declaration). The Dordogne and its backwaters produce carp over 20 kg, and Vassivière is famous for carp and zander. On the Landes lakes black bass is mostly catch-and-release. The Atlantic coast offers free sea fishing with mandatory registration.
What permit do you need for Nouvelle-Aquitaine?
A carte de pêche is legally required in France for fishing in rivers, canals, and lakes. You choose how long it stays valid (1 day, 7 days, or the annual interfederal card), fill in your details, and we email you the official PDF license. The daily card is valid in the chosen département, the weekly and annual cards in 91 reciprocal départements. No permit is needed at sea — but since 2026, mandatory free registration applies for targeting certain species, which we can also arrange for you.
